PAHALGAM

PAHALGAM

Pahalgam, “mini Switzerland” in the pristine Kashmir Valley has always been a favourite with the tourists, also an ideal locale for film shootings. With the onset of Summers, tourists were thronging the Kashmir Valley in thousands, enjoying the fruits of normalisation of situation, post abrogation of Article 370. As a consequence, complacency tends to set in, we had to pay a vey heavy  price of this security lapse. 28 precious lives snuffed out brutally, the perpetrators making it a point to confirm the religious identity of the victim before shooting him.

As a first step, diplomatic actions have been initiated, suspension of Indus Water Treaty being the principal one amongst them. It is a contentious issue with many analysts asking the pertinent question that in the absence of any water storage infrastructure, is it merely tokenism or is there some tangible gain expected to accrue from this action. We have to trust our leaders that they must have also debated this before announcing these actions. What next?

The dilemma which Indian Govt is faced with right now is, what will be the befitting response to the terror attack in Pahalgam, as Balakot type air strikes or surgical strike post Uri are practically ruled out. The reason is obvious, surprise is the major factor at play in such actions and our neighbour is expecting us and is ready with his arsenal in place. Modi ji has sprung surprises and the Armed Forces played their role to perfection inflicting serious damage to the terrorist camps, keeping the threshold below a full scale war. Armchair analysts sitting in air-conditioned studios wage their own brand of warfare on a daily basis, but wars are fought with a purpose, keeping an end state in mind and India would do well not to  get sucked into a Russia-Ukraine kind of abyss. But that does not mean punitive action should not be taken, and I am sure that kinetic action will follow and will not be on predictable lines.

We as citizens also have a role to play, instead of venting our impotent rage on social media platforms, can we form groups comprising not just hundreds, not just thousands but in lakhs cutting across religious lines, march into the Valley with Muslim brothers leading the charge. Simply swamp the terrorists, their sympathisers, overwhelm them, spread out into the valley every nook and corner, take your vehicles, hire transport, be self sufficient. Strength is in our numbers, and don’t you forget, if we are 100 of us and four of these terrorists confront us, we can charge on them, they can kill may be five or injure another couple but ultimately they will be scared and will run away, chase them. Prove it to the world that we can’t be scared by these cowards.

I know this sounds radical, but the message goes home to their backers that we can’t afford to fool around any longer. This attack is not just on tourists, it is against the idea of India and we Indians  will leave no stone unturned to protect not just this idea but also our people and our boundaries.

Thought provocating

Well said, but radicalized and brainwashed are animals.

Good thoughts sir, but don't seem to be practical. Who will leave his job/ business to get hit by terrorists?? Will Govt permit construction of homeostasis? Who will bear the cost? What about logistics of these fighters against terrorists? The weather & non availability of basic daily requirements is a problem for armed forces too.
My two pence thoughts on your solution.surgical strikes will just be indicative and will have an effect for a month or so. Water treaty abrogation will have a long term Problem for the complete country, though not having a direct effect on the terrorist organisation.

When faith becomes a reason for death, we lose not just lives, but a part of our collective soul... can such things be forgiven or forgotten?

Never underestimate the confidence of arm chair experts like our TV channels and WhatsApp warriors. . They have mastered everything that they have never tried.

U r right, some one could have put up a fight, fully knowing that they will be killed one way or the other. Lastly some smart chap could have followed them and given there location to security forces. It is imperative that we build this type of culture in our selves to put some fear in the mind of these bustards.

So well said, numbers do make all the difference. Organised flooding of Kashmir with People is definitely happening, just a matter of time.

Well articulated ..One option like u hinted is to make local population anti pak..very thought provoking article

We need to wait for the right opportunity to strike, Very rightly said Surprise is lost, adversary is waiting for the response. So just be more cautious to execute any operations. Not to escalate to a Nuc war.
Great reading 😃

Very well written Sir.
One of the motives of the perpetrators to carry out such a targetted attack was to further cause communal tensions and increase divide in society based on religion. In addition to the many actions which the government will take to teach these miscreants a lesson, one submission from my end is to rebroadcast small patriotic songs like 'Mile Sur Mera Tumhara' and 'Desh Raag' on FMs and TV channels. Such non kinetic initiatives will go a long way in countering the ill intentions of the perpetrators.

Sir, By following Modi ji political life and by dwelling upon his past decisions, it's now clear that he is able to resolve the decision dilemmas quite well. I think the response to such small scale attacks would b two fold.
One is the long term action plan to keep Bharat safe from both violence and exploitation that started being formulated right from the time he took oath in 2014 and second is the event based response each time. In fact, each such event is an opportunity to press in with the larger action plan like Sindhu River treaty being junked.
Violent acts will also certainly need reverse military action within realm of our Military capabilities. That possibly is already planned with multiple options and awaiting the go ahead for most appropriate one.

But larger and more important aspect is what can each individual contribute in this eternal fight with Adharm. And are we as each family doing our bit. Most are not and that remains our eternal weakness. Expecting every thing from Govt is actually expecting others to do our own bit of duty too. This aloofness from participating in making human habitats safer is somehow not even understood by most.

Don’t agree with you on this one . Have been in the valley for many years . You have to see the larger picture . This was ethnic in nature . Raleev , galeev was not too far back . The entire KP population was more or less cleansed from the valley . Who did it , and who sympathised with it ?
Modi by his diplomacy and foreign policy measures has blunted internal and external threats which are basically Islamic . This threat will remain unless we manage to remove radicalism from Islam , which is easier said than done .
We firstly need Hindu unity . Secondly we need to have pressure groups which will ensure Hindu safety .
Measures like teaching Hindu kids basic self defence is also a must . The meek standing in line at Pahalgam to be executed by one bullet each was just not done .
Lastly we must stand against the financial support which is lent to the problem , both internal and external by some extent by draconian laws passed like waqf and inanities like halal certification etc
There are many other steps but we must start now …..

Another aspect which deserves attention is that our national intelligence needs to be ramped up considerably

The idea given to tackle Kashmir issue is not practical and implementable as Indians National fervour in such situations is nearly dismal. It’s next to impossible that a Muslim leader would volunteer to take the lead. It takes generations to generate nationalism and it’s a bitter truth that this is not done even in our schools. I have multifold suggestions with short term and midterm gains.

1. Forced tourism : Each state to motivate its police force to go on vacation to Kashmir by granting additional leave of 7-10 days with fringe benefits/ complimentary. Imagine it can be million in number. While doing so ensure military security is in place in every nook and corner.
2. Army Chief to do the same and send a lakh of its army personnel on vacation at any point of time again with fringe benefits out of regimental/other grants.
3. The moment this is seen by common citizens of India, they will follow in hoards
4. Generate National fervour as a policy on TV/ Social Media
5 State doctrine to tackle Pakistani terrorism proactively
6. Diplomatic channels have done no good between the two countries, no point in wasting time
7. Shut Bollywood for Pakistan
8. No sports for the time being
9. Financial terrorism should be the key as a state policy
10. Surgical strikes as part of the doctrine and not one off like Balakot strike.
11. Prepare to take over POK rather than just talking about it during electioneering. It’s doable in the larger respect and interest of our Nation.

The above is easily maintainable and no need to go out for full scale war even in the near future.

I am of the view, we should keep our Comments reserved. The persons responsible and accountable are capable of taking the right decision since have all the inputs available of self and the adversary which are necessary. Defence Experts/Analysts should be banned to utter a word even, as they are not competent and would only spread the rumour. Even while in service information was known, only to need to know, at h hour and d day basis. We have always been functioning one up one down and never knew the overall scenario of the nation. The contingency plans are always revised with the threat perception and the latest technology. How can anyone sitting outside be Right in his comments.
